Loud’n Roasted Files to Open a Coffee Shop in the Old Meanwhile Space in Herndon

Loud’n Roasted Coffee Roasters, a family-owned roaster with cafes in Chantilly and Ashburn, has applied to open a coffee shop at 2309 Woodland Crossing Drive in Herndon. That storefront at Woodland Park Crossing, the Harris Teeter shopping center off Sunrise Valley Drive, has sat dark since Meanwhile Coffee closed at the end of August.

The company filed a food establishment application with the Fairfax County Health Department on Thursday, Oct. 22, according to the county’s PLUS permit system. Loud’n Roasted has not announced the Herndon shop on its website, which still lists two locations, and no opening date has been set.

The Oct. 22 application starts the county’s plan review

A food establishment application is the first step a new cafe or restaurant takes with the county’s Health Department. Inspectors review the plans for the kitchen and counter before the business can receive a permit to operate. The Loud’n Roasted record, HFOODA-2026-00516, shows a status of Submitted, which means the review has only started.

The record does not say how much construction Loud’n Roasted plans for the space. The filing came less than eight weeks after Meanwhile served its last drinks there.

The company roasts its own beans and sells monthly coffee flights

Sherif Marzouk and his wife started Loud’n Roasted in 2019 in South Riding, roasting beans and delivering them to customers. The first storefront opened in Chantilly at 14100 Sullyfield Circle, where the cafe shares space with Megabytes Eatery. A second, smaller shop opened at Farmwell Hunt Plaza in Ashburn in early 2025, Patch reported.

The menu centers on small-batch coffee the company roasts itself, espresso lattes and nitro cold brew, which is cold brew coffee infused with nitrogen and served from a tap, giving it a creamy head. Each month the cafes add a new tasting flight of two flavored lattes and two nitro cold brews, served hot or iced, with dairy-free options, according to the company’s own description.

The shops also sell whole-bean coffee by the bag, from single origins such as Ethiopia and Guatemala to house blends with names like Loud’n Mama and Espresso Lane, and the company rents out a mobile coffee cart for employee events, weddings and private parties.

The Chantilly cafe is open weekdays from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., and the Ashburn cafe runs 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekends. Herndon hours have not been posted.

The storefront has poured coffee before, first for Starbucks and then for Meanwhile

2309 Woodland Crossing Drive was a Starbucks until Nov. 30, 2018, when the chain closed it in a round of company-wide closures, Reston Now reported in January 2019.

Meanwhile Coffee reopened the storefront as a coffee shop in March 2025. The owners built the shop around a comic book theme, with superhero art on the walls and drinks like an iced lavender mocha, and we wrote about it shortly after it opened. In August the owners announced they would close, citing the economy, rising rent, county taxes and tariffs, and the shop’s last weekend was Aug. 29 and 30, The Burn reported.

We were sorry to lose Meanwhile, and we are glad the space is headed back to coffee rather than sitting empty. For the townhouse and condo communities off Sunrise Valley Drive, the new shop restores a coffee shop within walking distance of the grocery store, and Loud’n Roasted arrives with seven years of roasting behind it. Our guide to coffee shops in Reston and Herndon will add it once it opens.

Woodland Park Crossing has two more food tenants on the way

Two other food businesses are preparing to open at the same center. GiGi Urbano Italian Kitchen, a sandwich shop from the family behind URBANO Modern Italian in Sterling, told The Burn in September that it hoped to open in October. Donatos Pizza filed a build-out permit on Sept. 30 for a space at 2328 Woodland Crossing Drive.

Nearby, on Tuesday, Oct. 27, the Board of Supervisors will hear Parkline at Woodland Park, a plan to replace three office buildings off Sunrise Valley Drive with 429 to 584 homes.

We will add an opening date and Herndon hours to this post when Loud’n Roasted announces them.
