Reston and Herndon have more than a dozen coffee shops that are not Starbucks, and they spread across both towns. A roaster works out of an office park on Sunset Park Drive in Herndon. A few doors away, a French bakery bakes its own baguettes and often sells out of pastries. A bike shop on the W&OD Trail pours lattes beside the trail, and a cafe on Lake Anne serves coffee in the morning and wine in the evening.
National Coffee Day on September 29 gave us the excuse to write the list down. The guide runs by neighborhood, from Lake Anne to South Reston, Sunrise Valley Drive and Reston Town Center, then across the line into Herndon. A short section at the end sorts the shops by what you need: an early start, a table for a laptop, a stop on a bike ride, a bag of beans, or a cup after dinner.
Hours change, so check a shop’s own page before you make a special trip.
Lake Anne has a coffee house on the water and a North African cafe a few doors down
Lake Anne Coffee House & Wine Bar sits on Washington Plaza at the edge of the lake, and its outdoor tables face the water. Eve and Rick Thompson, longtime Reston residents, bought the shop in 2015 and closed it that fall for a renovation. It pours coffee from Caffè Amouri, a small-batch roaster in Vienna, and cooks a seasonal menu from Virginia vendors wherever it can.
The coffee house opens at 8 a.m. on weekdays and Saturdays and 9 a.m. on Sundays, and from Wednesday through Saturday it stays open until 9 p.m. as a restaurant with wine, beer and cocktails. The website recommends reservations for dinner. From April into November, the Reston Farmers Market sets up on Saturday mornings in the Lake Anne Village Center parking lot nearby.
Café Anne sits a few doors from Lake Anne Brew House and leans harder on food. The kitchen draws on Moroccan and Algerian cooking: merguez lamb sausage on baguette, ras el hanout chicken, couscous, and cast-iron waffles topped with house-made gelato. It serves espresso drinks too, and its shaded patio sits on the lake.
De Clieu brought a full cafe to Soapstone Drive in South Reston
De Clieu Coffee & Sandwich opened on Soapstone Drive in May 2025, filling a 2,049-square-foot building that had stood empty since Soapstone Cleaners closed in 2016. Owners Chang Koh and Jade Lee started De Clieu in Old Town Fairfax in 2014, and the Reston cafe is the only De Clieu open besides the original. The name honors Gabriel-Mathieu de Clieu, the French naval officer who carried a coffee seedling across the Atlantic to Martinique in the 1720s.
The Reston cafe brews Intelligentsia coffee from Chicago and makes its own syrups. The menu covers a full breakfast and lunch: Belgian waffles, Manhattan bagels, pastries and breakfast sandwiches in the morning, then pressed sandwiches and gelato later in the day. The room is large and bright, with plenty of tables and an outdoor seating area.
We wrote about what De Clieu means for the Soapstone Drive strip when it arrived. The shop sits close to South Lakes High School and the neighborhoods around Soapstone Drive.
Sunrise Valley Drive added Simply Social in 2025 and MOTW in 2026
Simply Social Coffee is the third shop from owner Kathy Pao, who opened the first one in Fairfax in 2018 and a second in Vienna. The Reston shop takes up the second floor of Sunrise Valley Center at 11511 Sunrise Valley Drive, above a dental office, and seats about 40 people, according to FFXnow. The menu leans toward breakfast: Belgian waffles, breakfast sandwiches, and platters of eggs, potatoes and meat. Salads, quesadillas and black bean wraps cover lunch.
MOTW Coffee & Pastries opened in July 2026 on the ground floor of The Point at Rise apartments at 11830 Sunrise Valley Drive. The brand grew out of the Muslims of the World Instagram account and now runs more than 20 shops around the country. Reston is its first in Virginia. The menu centers on specialty lattes, including date and cardamom, along with traditional Yemeni chai, matcha, and pastries that include baklava, plus savory samosas.
MOTW stays open latest on weekends. Its website lists 8 p.m. closings Sunday through Thursday and midnight on Friday and Saturday. We covered MOTW’s arrival when its sign permit came through.
Farther west on the same road, Sunrise Cafe at 12355 Sunrise Valley Drive serves the office crowd from inside an office building. It runs a sandwich and salad bar on weekdays from 6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and closes on weekends.
Reston Town Center has a Boston bakery, a gelato shop and a from-scratch bakery cafe
Tatte Bakery & Cafe opened on Market Street in November 2023, in the space by the fountain across from the pavilion. Tzurit Or founded Tatte in 2007 by selling pastries at a Boston farmers market, and the company now runs more than 50 cafes. A long pastry case holds croissants and loaves. Shakshuka, served in a skillet, is Tatte’s signature dish, and the kitchen also turns out quiche, tartines and sandwiches, with brunch on weekends.
Pitango Gelato & Coffee sits on Democracy Drive. Noah Dan founded the company in 2006, modeling it on the gelato he grew up with in Trieste, Italy. Pitango makes its gelato from the organic milk of grass-fed Jersey cows on a Maryland family farm, churns it in each shop every day, and makes its sorbets from whole fruit. The Reston shop stays open until 10 p.m. most nights and 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, according to its website. The coffee side runs on espresso, drip and cold brew blends developed with Vigilante Coffee, a roaster in the Washington area, and Pitango sells those blends only in its own shops.
Roggenart Bakery & Cafe opened at RTC West, on Sunset Hills Road, in August 2025. The company started in 2017 and makes its pastries from scratch: croissants, danishes, Dutch pretzels and a croissant-cookie hybrid it calls the crookie. It pours a full espresso menu to go with them.
Weird Brothers roasts its coffee in Herndon, and Le Vingt Trois bakes a few doors away
Weird Brothers Coffee calls itself Herndon’s first coffee roaster. Brothers Paul and Kenny Olsen started the business as a coffee truck in 2016 and opened a coffee bar called the Roasting Factory at 321 Sunset Park Drive within about a year. Paul is an Army veteran, and the company describes itself as disabled-veteran owned and operated. The roasting started on a modified backyard grill. Weird Brothers now roasts on a 20-kilogram Mill City machine and sells its beans by the bag.
The menu runs toward sweet specialty drinks alongside straight espresso and drip, with breakfast, paninis and pastries. A second Herndon shop in Worldgate Centre opens daily from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., with free wifi, outdoor seating and oat, almond and soy milk. The company has also opened in Leesburg and, according to The Burn, is looking for franchise partners in Virginia and Maryland.
Le Vingt Trois Cafe & Bakery sits at 311 Sunset Park Drive, a few doors from the Roasting Factory. Mary Caroline Achi opened it in February 2021. The name is French for “the twenty-three,” a lucky number for Achi and her husband. The kitchen bakes everything in house, including the baguettes. The apricot tarte is the top seller, and the croissants, pain au chocolat and jambon-beurre sandwiches go fast. Pastries often sell out, so arrive early or reserve ahead through the cafe’s online ordering.
The two shops share an office park off Sunset Park Drive, so one stop covers a bag of fresh beans and a box of pastries.
Downtown Herndon’s coffee bar sits inside a bike shop on the W&OD Trail
Green Lizard Cycling opened in 2013 in the historic Nachman building at 718 Lynn Street, where the Washington & Old Dominion Trail passes through downtown Herndon. Beth and Dave Meyer built it as a bike shop with a coffee bar looking out on the trail. The bar serves coffee, lattes, mochas, teas and Italian sodas, and the shop now adds food and beer.
The shop opens at 7 a.m. on weekends and 8 a.m. on weekdays, per its website. A ride on the W&OD from Reston reaches downtown Herndon in a few miles, and the Herndon Municipal Center, the town green and the downtown restaurants sit a block away.
Old Town Coffee pours organic espresso next door to Moo Thru
Old Town Coffee Herndon opened on July 5, 2024 at 315 Spring Street in the Reston-Herndon business park. Frank and Caitlin Kenney, longtime Herndon residents, own it along with the Moo Thru ice cream shop that shares the building, which they opened a month earlier. “It’s all premium organic coffees and espresso,” the owners told FFXnow at the opening.
The menu covers drip coffee, specialty lattes and plant-based energy drinks, with breakfast burritos, breakfast sandwiches, donuts and pastries in the morning and salads at lunch. At the opening, the shop kept 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. hours, which would make it the earliest start in this guide. Confirm the current hours before you plan a 6 a.m. stop.
Beignets & Brew opened on Elden Street in August 2026
Beignets & Brew held its grand opening in Herndon Centre on August 7, 2026, with a ribbon cutting by Mayor Keven LeBlanc. Chris and Shannon Kramolis founded the franchise in Destin, Florida, in 2023, and the Herndon shop is its first in Northern Virginia.
The beignets come in New Orleans style under a heap of powdered sugar, with Nutella, cinnamon swirl and seasonal versions and a row of dipping sauces. Coffee, tea and smoothies round out the counter. The shop keeps the same hours every day, 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Tona Coffee is coming to Dulles Station, and Meanwhile Coffee closed
Tona Coffee plans an Ethiopian coffee cafe on the ground floor of The Mark at Dulles Station, in the same retail row as Tensu Ethiopian Restaurant & Market. The owners filed a permit for heating and ventilation work on September 22, 2026, and have not announced an opening date.
Meanwhile Coffee, the comic-book-themed shop in Woodland Park Crossing near the Reston line, closed at the end of August 2026 after about a year and a half. The owners cited rent, county taxes, tariffs and the economy.
Match the shop to the morning you have planned
An early start. Old Town Coffee opened at 6 a.m. when it launched, and Sunrise Cafe opens at 6:30 on weekdays. Weird Brothers at Worldgate and Beignets & Brew open at 7 every day.
A table for a laptop. Weird Brothers at Worldgate lists free wifi on its website. Simply Social has room for about 40 people, and De Clieu fills a building of about 2,000 square feet. Confirm wifi before you settle in anywhere else.
A stop on a ride or a run. Green Lizard sits on the W&OD Trail in downtown Herndon, and Lake Anne Coffee House sits on the plaza along the walk around Lake Anne.
Beans to take home. Weird Brothers roasts its own and sells them by the bag. Lake Anne Coffee House brews beans from Caffè Amouri in Vienna.
Pastries. Le Vingt Trois and Roggenart bake from scratch, and Tatte fills a long pastry case. Le Vingt Trois often sells out, so go early.
Coffee after dinner. Pitango pours espresso until 10 p.m. most nights and 11 on weekends, and MOTW stays open until midnight on Friday and Saturday. Beignets & Brew closes at 9 every night, and Lake Anne Coffee House serves until 9 from Wednesday through Saturday.
Seven of the open shops on this list arrived in July 2024 or later
Old Town Coffee opened in July 2024. De Clieu and Café Anne followed in the spring of 2025, Simply Social and Roggenart in late summer 2025, MOTW in July 2026 and Beignets & Brew in August 2026. Tona is next. MOTW took a ground-floor space in a new apartment building, and De Clieu filled a building on Soapstone Drive that had sat empty for nine years.
