Auria, a Colorado Springs company that makes software and communications technology for space and missile operations, is opening its East Coast headquarters in Reston. The company leased 18,500 square feet at Summit I, 2000 Edmund Halley Drive, and plans to open by mid-2027, the Washington Business Journal reported.
Gov. Abigail Spanberger’s office announced the move on Oct. 27. Auria will invest $1.8 million and create 78 jobs, according to the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority. Hiring has already started for space systems engineering, product and business development, and corporate infrastructure support roles, the Business Journal reported.
Auria will test satellite command systems in a Reston lab
The Reston office will hold a mission integration center, a lab where Auria and its customers and partners can develop, test and demonstrate command, control and mission systems for national security work. Operators use command and control software to direct satellites and their missions, and Auria also builds satellite scheduling and mission planning tools.
“Northern Virginia is rapidly becoming Auria’s largest employment footprint, making Reston the natural choice to complement our existing Warrenton operations and serve as our East Coast headquarters,” CEO Damian DiPippa said in the announcement.
Enlightenment Capital, a Chevy Chase investment firm, formed Auria in 2024 by merging four companies: Boecore, Ascension Engineering Group, Orbit Logic and La Jolla Logic. In February Auria bought BCubed Engineering of Warrenton. The company now employs more than 500 people, 150 to 200 of them on the East Coast, and its Warrenton office of about 80 stays open. Earlier this month Auria won a four-year Air Force Research Laboratory contract to develop autonomous systems that identify and track objects in orbit, and in September it won a contract to train Space Force members, Patch reported.
The Virginia Economic Development Partnership worked with the county’s economic development authority on the deal, and the state will help cover recruiting and training costs through the Virginia Jobs Investment Program.
Summit I sits steps from the Reston Town Center Metro
Summit I is a 1980s office building on the south side of the Dulles Toll Road, a short walk from the south entrance of the Reston Town Center Metro station and about two blocks from the Wegmans at Halley Rise. Blue Origin’s Reston engineering office is across the street at 2001 Edmund Halley Drive, and Scout Space keeps its headquarters next door at 2002.
Bernstein Management Corp. owns Summit I. The building is one of the four offices in Bernstein’s Reston Crossing rezoning application, which proposes up to 1,620 homes next to the station. The existing offices stay open while the county reviews the plan.
Auria’s new hires could be shopping for homes in 2027
Auria follows two other space and defense companies into Reston and Herndon this fall. GRVTY filed to put its name on a Herndon office building in September, and MyDefence opened its North American headquarters on Sunrise Valley Drive on Oct. 15.
Engineers Auria hires for a mid-2027 opening would be house hunting in the spring and summer of 2027. From the condos and townhouses near Halley Rise and the Reston Town Center station, they could walk to Summit I, and the Silver Line connects the office with the rest of Reston and Herndon.
