Voodoo Brewing opened on Saturday, October 24, on the ground floor of the Makers Rise apartments on Dulles Station Boulevard, a short walk from the Innovation Center Metro station. In September we toured the room before a single beer was poured. We went back for opening weekend and could barely move.
Voodoo is the newest stop in our guide to breweries in Reston and Herndon. Most of the other local taprooms run on the quieter side. Voodoo runs like a bar.
Voodoo runs like a bar, with music up and a quieter patio outside
The music sits on the loud side, but never so loud that you can’t hear the people at your table. On opening weekend the room held a good, diverse crowd. Most of the indoor seating is stand-up tables, so people move around, find friends and walk up to the bar. The patio is quieter, and the whole patio is dog-friendly, so a calmer evening with a pint is still possible.
A few TVs hang on the walls without taking over the room, so we wouldn’t call it a game-day bar. The energy comes from the crowd and the music. Opening weekend ran loud, as opening weekends do, and we’ll see where the room settles. For a quieter visit, go earlier in the day.
Pinball, murals and a hidden cat door fill the room
A local artist covered the main walls in bright murals and carried the work into the restrooms, where George Washington makes an appearance. Owner Curry Lee added a hidden door with a speakeasy look, decorated as a tribute to his love of cats. We will leave it to you to find it.
The taproom has a row of retro pinball machines, with games rotating in from The Pinball Basement. On opening weekend the machines had a line. Curry plans live music, DJs and comedy on a small stage in the corner, and trivia runs on Tuesday nights. A Halloween party is the first theme night on the calendar.
The bar pours far more than beer, and the kitchen serves elevated pub food
The Herndon taproom does not brew. It pours Voodoo’s beers from Pennsylvania on about a dozen of its 24 taps. The lineup includes:
- Good Vibes and Lil Vibes, both West Coast IPAs
- Empty Calories, a light lager
- Voodoo Love Child, a fruited Belgian tripel
- Oh Mama, a golden lager brewed in Pittsburgh with the rock band Styx
The other taps and the bar cover cider, wine, seasonal cocktails, frozen margaritas and non-alcoholic cans. The vodka comes from Open Road Distilling in Reston Town Center. A cocktail flight brings six small pours. A group with one IPA drinker and three people who want something else can all order here.
Executive chef Jarroun Durrette, who worked with Curry at Honor Brewing in Fairfax, runs a kitchen built around hand-stretched pizza, hand-formed smash burgers and wings. Curry calls it elevated pub fare.
Between us we ordered Good Vibes and a hazy IPA. The chicken fingers came out moist and stayed hot to the last one. The fries, cooked in beef tallow, which is rendered beef fat, have a little extra richness. The smash burger was very good, and next time we want to compare it against the bigger burger on the menu.
Curry Lee lives in Reston and spent years in the beer business
Curry’s full name is John Curry Lee. He is a Virginia Tech graduate with about seven years in the brewing industry. He had planned to open his own brewery before the pandemic, found Voodoo’s franchise program instead, and won the Herndon territory after an approval day with the company’s owners.
He lives in Reston, a few miles from the taproom. On opening weekend we found him behind the bar and congratulated him. He had about four seconds to spare.
Voodoo Herndon already sponsors the Loudoun Rugby Football Club men’s team, and the taproom plans community fundraisers and outreach as it settles in.
Voodoo started in 2005 in Meadville, Pennsylvania
Matt Allyn founded Voodoo in 2005 in Meadville, a college town in northwestern Pennsylvania. For its first seven years the company only brewed beer for distribution. In 2012 head brewer Curt Rachocki and his brother Matteo bought it and opened its first taproom. Voodoo started franchising in 2017, and by March 2025 it had four company-owned locations and 22 franchises.
Herndon is Voodoo’s first location in the Washington area and its third in Virginia, after Virginia Beach, which opened in January 2024, and Williamsburg, which cut its ribbon in February 2026.
We toured the empty room in September, before the first pour
Fans waited about a year and a half. FFXnow first reported the Herndon plans in March 2025 with a target of the end of that year, and in April 2026 the owners told The Burn they were aiming for May. When we walked through on September 17, the murals were up, the pinball machines were in place and the team was waiting on final permits.
New homes around Dulles Station give Voodoo a crowd within walking distance
Metro opened Innovation Center station in November 2022, where Route 28 crosses the Dulles Toll Road. Dulles Station has a Herndon mailing address, but it sits outside the Town of Herndon in the unincorporated McNair area of Fairfax County. Near the station, these projects are finished, underway or proposed:
- Makers Rise. Crimson Partners welcomed the first residents to its 356-apartment building in September 2023. Residents can walk downstairs to Voodoo.
- Across the street. A new apartment building with ground-floor retail is under construction directly across Dulles Station Boulevard, on the last undeveloped piece of the Dulles Station development.
- Coppermine Commons III. On August 25, 2026, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors approved 98 townhouses from Felice Development Group to replace a vacant office building at 13851 Sunrise Valley Drive.
- Dulles Corner. Pulte Homes proposed 145 townhouses in January 2026 in place of the Park West office building at 13880 Dulles Corner Lane.
- King Johns Way. The county’s housing authority bought land next to the station for about 400 affordable homes.
Tona Coffee is building a café at The Mark at Dulles Station. We expect Voodoo to help pull more shops and restaurants into the new ground-floor space across the street, the way Aslin added evening energy on Elden Street in downtown Herndon.
Two of these projects are townhouse communities, so buyers could soon have new homes to purchase within walking distance of a brewery, in a corner of Herndon long defined by office parks and rental apartments.
