Your Complete Guide to the 2026 Free Summer Concert Series in Reston and Herndon

Summer Concert at the Reston Town Center Pavilion

If you’ve lived in Reston or Herndon for any length of time, you already know that summer here hits differently than almost anywhere else in Northern Virginia. Between late May and early September, eight different free concert series light up the area on weeknights and weekends alike — at the Herndon Town Green, the Reston Town Center Pavilion, Reston Town Square Park, Reston Station’s Metro Plaza, Lake Anne Plaza, and Halley Rise. That is, by any measure, a remarkable amount of free live music.

This post rounds up every 2026 concert series in one place, with dates, lineups, genre descriptions, and venue details. Some series have released their full schedules; others are still finalizing acts. Where lineups are still being announced, I’ve noted it and linked to the official pages.

Whether you’re a longtime local or you just moved to the area and want to hit the ground running, bookmark this page. It’s going to be a busy summer.

1. Friday Night Live! — Herndon Town Green

When: Every Friday, May 22 through September 4, 2026
Concessions open: 6:00 pm
Music: 6:30 pm to 10:00 pm (a few dates have a special 6:00 pm start — see table)
Where: Herndon Town Green, Downtown Herndon
Cost: Free admission; food, beer, wine, and seltzer available for purchase
More info: herndonrocks.com

Friday Night Live is the granddaddy of the local free concert scene. Produced by the Dulles Regional Chamber of Commerce, it has been running since 1995 and this summer marks the 32nd season. The season finale on September 4 — Shake the Room — will be the 500th programmed show since the series launched. That’s a milestone worth showing up for.

Shows are on the Town Green in downtown Herndon, just steps from local restaurants and shops. Concessions open at 6:00 pm and music runs until 10:00 pm. The crowd is a genuine mix: families with lawn chairs and strollers, couples, groups of neighbors, and people who just happen to be walking by and decide to stay. That’s the spirit of the thing.

2. Reston Concerts on the Town — Reston Town Center Pavilion

When: Saturdays, May 16 through August 22, 2026 (plus a special two-night run June 5–6)
Time: 7:30 pm to approximately 9:30–10:00 pm (June 5 & 6 start at 5:30 pm — see note)
Where: The Pavilion at Reston Town Center, 11900 Market Street, Reston

No outside alcohol permitted (Sip & Stroll rules apply)
Rain or shine (covered Pavilion)
More info: restontc.org or call 703-435-6600 x2 for day-of weather updates

The RTC Pavilion concert series is now in its 33rd season, and it remains one of the best-produced free shows in the DMV. The covered Pavilion means rain doesn’t derail your plans, and the free garage parking removes one of the usual headaches of coming into Town Center. The acts tend to lean toward recognizable tribute bands and regional favorites with broad appeal.

One highlight worth noting: June 5 and June 6 are a special two-night event featuring Big Al & The Jokers, a nine-piece Latvian band making their exclusive U.S. premiere. The shows start earlier than usual at 5:30 pm, with multi-WAMMIE Award winners Matt Niess and The Capitol Bones opening. Both nights are expected to be something genuinely different — full horn section, jive, swing, R&B, and rock, and a stage show that doesn’t hold back.

No concert on July 4 this year — the organizers are giving the night off for America’s 250th anniversary.

RDGLDGRN is a Reston-based act that has toured globally, played Red Rocks, and collaborated with Dave Grohl and Pharrell. The June 27 show is a genuine homecoming. Check restontc.org for the full lineup and any updates.

3. Jazz Happy Hour with Darden & Friends — Reston Town Square Park

When: Two seasons — Spring: Fridays, May 22 through June 26; Fall: Fridays, September 11 through October 16
Time: 5:30 pm to 6:45 pm (September 25 and October 16 start at 5:00 pm)

Sip & Stroll rules apply — no outside alcohol (purchase drinks at Bartaco, Crafthouse, Pisco y Nazca, or Jinya Ramen Bar within the event area)
Weather cancellations: Call 703-435-6600, press 2
More info: restontc.org/darden-friends

This is the newest addition to the blog, and it’s been hiding in plain sight at Reston Town Center for four years. The Jazz Happy Hour with Darden & Friends is a tight, focused series: 75 minutes of jazz in an outdoor plaza setting, right in the heart of Town Center, starting at 5:30 on Friday afternoons. Curated by Darden Purcell — a national jazz recording artist and Director of Jazz Studies at George Mason University — the lineup pulls from the best of the regional jazz scene.

Parking in the Town Center garages is free after 5:00 pm, and the nearby restaurants participate in a Sip & Stroll program, so you can bring a drink to the show as long as it comes from one of the participating spots. The vibe is relaxed. It works especially well as a first stop on a Friday evening before heading somewhere else — or just as its own thing if you want to wind down after work surrounded by good music.

The series runs in two distinct seasons. The spring run goes May through June; the fall season picks back up in September and runs through mid-October.

Spring Season — Fridays, May 22 through June 26, 2026

Note: The May 22 show (Tedd Baker Organ Trio) was canceled due to weather. The season effectively started May 29.

Date Time Artist Genre / Description
Fri, May 22 5:30 pm Tedd Baker Organ Trio +1 Jazz organ trio (canceled — weather)
Fri, May 29 5:30 pm Janelle Gill Jazz piano
Fri, June 5–6 5:30 pm Matt Niess and The Capitol Bones Jazz trombone ensemble (moves to Pavilion as opener for Big Al & The Jokers — see RCOTT section)
Fri, June 12 5:30 pm Fran Vielma Quartet Latin jazz & percussion
Fri, June 19 5:30 pm Steve Fidyk and Evening Ledger Contemporary jazz
Fri, June 26 5:30 pm Gracie Jay Vocal jazz

Fall Season — Fridays, September 11 through October 16, 2026

Date Time Artist Genre / Description
Fri, Sept 11 5:30 pm Darden Purcell Vocal jazz (series curator)
Fri, Sept 18 5:30 pm Geoff Dean Jazz piano
Fri, Sept 25 5:00 pm Graham Breedlove Jazz trumpet
Fri, Oct 2 5:30 pm BLOOM Vocal jazz / neo-soul
Fri, Oct 9 5:30 pm Emily Davies Vocal jazz & flute
Fri, Oct 16 5:00 pm Stephen Philip Harvey Jazz saxophone

One practical note worth knowing: the 5:30 pm start time is intentional. RCC and Reston Station designed the Friday schedule so you can catch the Happy Hour set and then walk over to the Summerbration Fab Fridays concert at Reston Station, which starts at 7:30 pm. It’s a natural double-header if you want to make a full evening of it.

4. Fab Fridays Summerbration — Reston Station

When: Every Friday, May 29 through September 25, 2026
Time: 7:30 pm to 9:00 pm (September 11 runs 7:00–8:30 pm)
Where: Metro Plaza at Reston Station, 1900 Reston Metro Plaza, Reston (next to the Wiehle-Reston East Metro)
Cost: Free; up to 3 hours of free parking at Reston Station
Presented by: Reston Community Center and Reston Station (Comstock), in partnership with MSE Productions
More info: restoncommunitycenter.com/summermusic

Summerbration at Reston Station is one of those series that catches people off guard the first time they walk past it. The setting — at the base of the Reston Station development, right next to the Wiehle-Reston East Metro — is legitimately impressive for a free outdoor show. The series runs from Memorial Day weekend all the way through late September, much longer than you might expect, and the September shows include elevated “Signature Events” with a pop-up bar and photo booth on top of the usual concert setup.

This year’s series runs 18 concert dates. One September date — September 11 — is a Silent Dance Party, where attendees wear wireless headphones tuned to one of three live DJ mixes. It’s a different kind of event and worth noting if live bands are what you’re after.

Red, White & Boom! — America 250 Celebration (July 2–4)

The Fourth of July weekend at Reston Station is a three-day event this year, celebrating the country’s 250th anniversary with a separate lineup from the regular Fab Fridays. All three days are free.

Date Time Artist / Event Description
Thu, July 2 7:30 pm Bruce in the USA Bruce Springsteen tribute — with DJ from 5:30 pm, Budweiser Clydesdales, fireworks at 9:15 pm (at 1800 Reston Row Plaza)
Fri, July 3 7:30 pm The Prince Project Prince tribute — regular Fab Friday, part of America 250 weekend
Sat, July 4 5:30 pm The Darby Brothers 70s & 80s classic rock (Journey, Zeppelin, Queen, Foreigner, Tom Petty)
Sat, July 4 After concert The Sandlot Outdoor movie screening with inflatable baseball diamond

The July 2 event is particularly worth putting on the calendar. It’s not a Fab Friday — it’s a standalone Thursday event with a different feel, including the fireworks.

5. Sunset Concerts at Lake Anne Plaza

When: Wednesdays, June 24 through August 26, 2026
Time: 7:30 pm to 9:00 pm
Where: Lake Anne Plaza, 1609 Washington Plaza, Reston
Cost: Free admission
Presented by: Reston Community Center and MSE Productions; hosted by Lake Anne of Reston CUOA
More info: restoncommunitycenter.com/summermusic

Lake Anne Plaza is one of the most distinctive outdoor settings in all of Northern Virginia. Designed in the 1960s as part of Robert Simon’s original Reston vision, the plaza sits at the edge of Lake Anne with a waterfront promenade and the kind of old-world European character you don’t often find in the suburbs. On Wednesday evenings, when the light gets long and the music starts, it is a genuinely nice place to be.

The 2026 season runs ten weeks from June 24 through August 26. Five dates have been confirmed so far, with additional acts expected to be announced on a rolling basis through the season.

Date Time Artist Genre / Description
Wed, June 24 7:30 pm Shannon Bielski & Moonlight Drive Bluegrass / Americana

6. Take a Break Thursdays — Halley Rise

When: Thursdays, June 25 through August 27, 2026
Time: 7:30 pm to 9:00 pm
Where: Halley Rise, 2025 Fulton Place, Reston (near Wegmans and the Herndon Metro)
Cost: Free admission
Presented by: Reston Community Center and Halley Rise, in partnership with MSE Productions
More info: restoncommunitycenter.com/summermusic

Take a Break Thursdays at Halley Rise is the most eclectic of the RCC summer series. The booking tends to pull from a wider range of genres — you might get swing one week and Caribbean rhythms the next. The venue is Halley Rise, the newer mixed-use development near the Herndon Metro and Wegmans, with a pleasant outdoor plaza suited to an early-evening show. This is the series’ third year.

The first five dates have been confirmed. RCC typically announces additional acts on a rolling basis through the season:

7. Saturday Morning Family Fun — Reston Town Square Park

Time: 10:00 am to 10:45 am
Where: Reston Town Square Park, corner of Market Street and Explorer Street, Reston Town Center
Cost: Free admission
Presented by: Reston Community Center and Reston Town Center Association, in partnership with MSE Productions
More info: restoncommunitycenter.com/summermusic

If you have young kids, this is the series that will make your summer. The Saturday morning shows at Town Square Park are short by design — 45 minutes — and pitched squarely at families with small children. The acts cover puppetry, magic, music, juggling, and more. The timing works well for families who want to get out early before the summer heat sets in, and the location right in the heart of Town Center means you can grab breakfast or a coffee nearby before or after.

Shows run July 4 through August 22. The first four acts have been confirmed, with more to be announced:

Date Time Artist Genre / Description
Sat, July 4 10:00 am Zack Smith & The Mardi Gras Kings New Orleans / Zydeco
Sat, July 11 10:00 am Blue Sky Puppet Theatre Puppet Theatre — “The Three (Not So) Little Pigs”

8. Sunday Art in the Park with Shenandoah Conservatory

When: Sundays, June 21 through August 30, 2026
Time: 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm
Where: Reston Town Square Park, corner of Market Street and Explorer Street, Reston Town Center
Cost: Free admission
Presented by: Reston Community Center and Reston Town Center Association, in partnership with Shenandoah Conservatory
More info: restoncommunitycenter.com/summermusic

Sunday Art in the Park rounds out the week nicely. Produced in partnership between RCC and Shenandoah University’s Conservatory, the series features different Shenandoah ensembles each week — strings, brass, chamber groups, and more. The level of musicianship is genuinely high, and the outdoor setting in the heart of Reston Town Center gives it a European summer festival feel.

This is the series that tends to surprise people the most. Reston gets a lot of credit for its free pop and rock concerts, but a summer full of high-quality classical and chamber music at no cost, on Sunday evenings, in a beautiful outdoor setting, is worth knowing about.

Each program is led by Shenandoah Conservatory faculty, which means the musicianship is the real thing — these aren’t student recitals. The June 21 opener brings an Afro-Cuban jazz ensemble led by a conservatory professor; the Winchester Jazz Collective on July 5 delivers New Orleans jazz and funk under the direction of the Conservatory’s Director of Jazz and Commercial Music. The range across the eleven weeks is genuinely wide: kora-influenced jazz, chamber strings, trombone ensembles, Disney classics, and 1960s covers all share the same stage.

The full 2026 lineup:

Bonus: South Lakes Village Center Amphitheater

One more spot worth knowing about, even though it doesn’t operate on a predictable schedule: South Lakes Village Center at 11120 South Lakes Drive has an outdoor amphitheater right on the edge of Lake Thoreau. It’s a beautiful setting — the kind of thing you could walk past a hundred times without realizing it’s there.

The center occasionally hosts live music and pop-up concerts in the amphitheater, but they tend not to announce anything until it’s fully confirmed and booked. There’s no formal season schedule the way the other series operate. The best way to catch these is to follow their events page at southlakesvillage.com/events and their Facebook page. It’s the kind of thing a neighbor might text you about on a Saturday afternoon. Worth keeping an eye on.

A Word on the Weather

A few practical notes. The RTC Pavilion concerts are rain or shine because of the covered venue, but most of the other series are outdoors without cover. RCC maintains a weather cancellation line at 703-476-4500 and typically posts updates on their Facebook page. For Friday Night Live, check herndonrocks.com or their social accounts (@herndonrocks) on the day of the show. For Reston Concerts on the Town and the Jazz Happy Hour, call 703-435-6600, press 2.

Reston and Herndon summers can be hot and humid. The evening shows (7:00 pm and later) are generally manageable, but the 10:00 am Saturday morning concerts are obviously a better bet for families looking to avoid the worst of the afternoon heat.

Reston and Herndon aren’t just convenient places to live. They’re communities with genuine public life built into them.
