Langley beat Chantilly 34-17 at Chantilly High School on Friday night, the only football game among the five schools we cover this week. It was Chantilly’s first loss since Week 2, and it drops the Chargers to 3-2. South Lakes, Oakton and Westfield are all 4-0 and sat on bye weeks; Herndon is 0-4 and idle as well. It is the quietest football Friday of the season so far, and it sits right before the loudest one: all four idle teams return Friday, October 2, when Herndon travels to South Lakes for the rivalry game between the two schools.
Volleyball, field hockey, cross country and golf filled the rest of the calendar for the week.
Both District Cross Country Meets Ran Wednesday, One With Results So Far
The Liberty District ran its fifth week of racing Wednesday, split across Bluemont Park in Arlington and Lake Fairfax Park in Reston. Herndon ran the Lake Fairfax course against Langley. Langley’s boys scored 15 points and won the team title. Herndon entered three finishers, led by Justin Fodor in 24 minutes, 48 seconds, and did not have enough runners to score as a team. No Herndon girl appears in the posted results.
The Concorde District ran its third meet the same day, an event called the Dobson Double Duals, at Burke Lake Park in Fairfax Station. South Lakes, Oakton, Westfield and Chantilly all entered. Neither MileSplit Virginia nor MaxPreps had posted results as of this writing. South Lakes’ boys also ran the Oatlands Invitational and the Octoberfest Invitational Saturday morning; those results were not posted either.
Girls Volleyball Split Four Matches Across Two Nights
Oakton beat South Lakes 3-0 at Oakton on Tuesday. The same night, Centreville beat Westfield 3-1 and Madison beat Chantilly 3-0 on the road. Chantilly turned it around Thursday, beating South Lakes 3-0 at home, while Marshall beat Herndon 3-1 at Herndon. Herndon also played at McLean on Tuesday, but neither the school nor MaxPreps has posted a result for that match yet.
Boys Volleyball Played Six Matches, Four of Them Straight Sets
South Lakes beat Oakton 3-0 on Tuesday, and Westfield beat Centreville 3-0 at home the same night. Chantilly beat Madison 3-1, and McLean beat Herndon 3-2. Wednesday brought a non-region result: Robinson beat Oakton 3-2. Thursday closed the week with South Lakes beating Chantilly 3-1 at home and Oakton beating Westfield 3-2 at Oakton. Herndon played at Marshall Thursday, and that result has not posted.
Field Hockey Produced Seven Results and One Overtime Win
Chantilly beat South Lakes 3-2 at home Tuesday, and Oakton beat Westfield 2-0 on the road the same night. Herndon beat Wakefield School 1-0 in overtime Wednesday at Herndon. That opponent is the private school in The Plains, a different team from Wakefield High School in Arlington, which Herndon played earlier this month. McLean beat Herndon 3-1 on Tuesday. Thursday brought three more: South Lakes beat Westfield 1-0 at home, Madison beat Oakton 1-0 at Oakton, and Chantilly beat Centreville 7-1 at home. South Lakes hosted McLean Friday evening, and that result has not posted.
Oakton and Westfield Met Three Times, and Oakton Won All Three
The two Concorde schools played each other in three different sports this week. Oakton won the field hockey meeting 2-0 Tuesday at Westfield, the boys volleyball meeting 3-2 Thursday at Oakton, and the girls volleyball meeting 3-0 Thursday at Westfield. Three sports, three games, three Oakton wins.
Golf Still Has Not Posted a Team Score in Seven Weeks
The Concorde District Golf Championships ran Tuesday at Twin Lakes Golf Course in Clifton. No school site, no aggregator, and no course listing has posted a team score in seven weeks.
Four Football Teams Return October 2, Led by the Herndon-South Lakes Rivalry
Herndon travels to South Lakes for the rivalry game Friday, October 2. Oakton plays at Langley the same night, and Westfield hosts Lake Braddock. Chantilly has an open date.
Six Home Games Land on Monday, Six More on Thursday
South Lakes hosts Westfield in boys volleyball Monday, and Herndon hosts Wakefield in girls volleyball the same night. Oakton hosts Madison in girls volleyball, Westfield hosts South Lakes in girls volleyball, and Chantilly hosts both Centreville in boys volleyball and Westfield in field hockey. Thursday carries six more, including Westfield and South Lakes meeting twice, in girls volleyball and field hockey. Oakton closes the week hosting Leonardtown in field hockey Saturday at 11 a.m.
For Reston and Herndon families specifically, South Lakes hosts Westfield (Monday), Fairfax (Thursday) and Herndon (Friday, the rivalry game), all at South Lakes High School. Herndon hosts Wakefield (Monday) and Yorktown (Thursday), both at Herndon High School. Neither Lake Fairfax Park nor Herndon Centennial Golf Course has anything on the calendar next week. All five golf teams travel outside the area Tuesday, to Bristow Manor Golf Club in Bristow for the Northern Region Championship.
