South Lakes beat Robinson 30-7 in Reston on Thursday, September 3, and moved to 2-0. Four of the five schools we cover played at home that night, which made Thursday the busiest football evening of the fall so far.
Football

Oakton has now shut out one opponent and scored 49 in each of its first two games. Westfield and Fairfax combined for 77 points in the only road game a local team played. Through two weeks, South Lakes, Oakton, and Westfield sit at 2-0, Chantilly at 1-1, and Herndon at 0-2.
Cross country
Herndon ran the Liberty District Week 2 meet at Lake Fairfax Park in Reston on Wednesday, September 2, a meet hosted by Langley. Four schools scored. In the boys 5K, Washington-Liberty won with 28 points, Yorktown took 29, Langley 94, and Herndon 101. John Zangilli led Herndon in 21:39.70. In the girls 5K, Yorktown won with 19, Washington-Liberty took 42, Herndon 89, and Langley 106. Jovie Jennings led Herndon in 25:10.30.
Concorde District Meet 1A, scheduled for Tuesday, September 1 in Reston, was cancelled. South Lakes, Oakton, Westfield, and Chantilly did not race this week.
Volleyball
Monday, August 31 opened the week. The Marshall girls won 3-1 in Reston while the South Lakes boys won 3-1 in Falls Church. Oakton and Herndon split gyms the same night, the Oakton girls winning 3-0 at home and the Oakton boys winning 3-0 in Herndon. Chantilly’s girls swept Washington-Liberty 3-0 at home. Lake Braddock hosted Westfield and the two split, Westfield’s girls winning 3-2 and the Lake Braddock boys winning 3-1.
Tuesday sent Chantilly to Langley, where the Langley girls won 3-2 and the Chantilly boys won 3-2 in Chantilly. Wednesday, South Lakes swept Highland 3-0 on the road and beat Langley 3-1 at home on the boys side. Oakton’s girls won 3-0 at McLean. Westfield’s boys beat Herndon 3-0 in Chantilly, and Yorktown’s girls won 3-1 in Herndon. Chantilly’s boys won 3-0 at Yorktown.
Field hockey
South Lakes beat Herndon 4-1 in Reston on Monday and Oakton won 7-0 at McLean the same night. Tuesday, Chantilly won 3-0 at Westfield. Wednesday brought a 2-1 Fairfax win over South Lakes in Fairfax, a 6-0 Herndon win over Justice at home, and a 6-0 Oakton win at Woodson. Lake Braddock beat Westfield 2-1 on Thursday.
Chantilly opened weekend tournament play Friday with an 11-0 win over Mount Vernon and a 2-1 loss to Marshall. South Lakes entered the same weekend bracket, and its Friday and Saturday results had not posted when this went up.
Golf
South Lakes hosted Oakton on Tuesday, September 1. No team total was posted, which has now held for four straight weeks across every school site, MaxPreps, and the course listings.
The week ahead
Football stays on Thursday. South Lakes hosts Battlefield, Westfield hosts Langley, and Herndon hosts Chantilly, which puts a Concorde and Liberty crossover in Herndon at 7:00 p.m. Before that, Tuesday and Wednesday fill both gyms and both turf fields, with Herndon hosting Chantilly in field hockey Tuesday and the two meeting again in volleyball Wednesday. Herndon’s cross country teams run at Bluemont Park in Arlington on Wednesday.
