Most people searching homes in Herndon or Reston already know the two names they expect to encounter: Herndon High and South Lakes. Oakton High School in Vienna is the one that catches buyers off guard. It sits about four miles east of Herndon's town center, in a different city, and it does not show up in casual conversations about Herndon schools. But if you are buying in certain parts of Herndon near Fox Mill Road and the Crossfield area, Oakton is the high school your children may be assigned to. And by most measures, that is a very good thing.
Oakton ranks among the top ten public high schools in Virginia. Its AP participation rate, National Merit numbers, performing arts program, and college outcomes put it well above the typical suburban comprehensive school. For relocating families who are quietly hoping their new home will feed to a strong high school, finding out they are in the Oakton pyramid can come as a welcome surprise.
Here is what you should know before buying in this area.

To confirm whether your specific address is in the Oakton pyramid, use the FCPS School Locator. The Oakton pyramid is one of the more geographically complex in FCPS, drawing students from areas that span Vienna, parts of Herndon, parts of Oakton, and areas near Chantilly. A street address alone is not a reliable guide.
Why Some Herndon Addresses Feed to Oakton
Oakton High School's attendance area extends further northwest than many buyers expect. The relevant pathway for Herndon-area families runs through Crossfield Elementary School, which serves parts of Herndon near Fox Mill Road and West Ox Road, and feeds into Rachel Carson Middle School, which in turn feeds to Oakton High. If your Herndon address is assigned to Crossfield Elementary, there is a good chance Oakton is your high school.
This matters because buyers sometimes assume all Herndon addresses feed to either Herndon High or South Lakes. That is not the case. Parts of the Herndon area are split across multiple pyramids, including Oakton, Westfield, and Chantilly, depending on exactly where the property sits. The FCPS locator is the only reliable way to check, and it is worth doing before you make an offer.
Rankings and Academic Profile
Niche gives Oakton an A+ overall grade and ranks it #8 among public high schools in Virginia, placing it consistently among the state's top tier of comprehensive public schools. GreatSchools rates it 8 out of 10 and has recognized it with two College Success Awards, which reflect how well a school prepares students for postsecondary education.
U.S. News and World Report ranks Oakton #6 in Virginia and #245 nationally, with an overall score of 98.63 out of 100. The college readiness index comes in at 69.1, the on-time graduation rate is 95%, and state assessment proficiency rates are 91% in math, 94% in reading, and 92% in science.
State testing data from the Virginia School Quality Profile shows math pass rates at 93% and reading at 94%, both substantially above state averages. The average SAT score is approximately 1,350 and the average ACT is 31. For postsecondary outcomes, 91.4% of Oakton's graduating class enrolled in a postsecondary program within 16 months of graduation, one of the stronger rates in FCPS.
AP and Advanced Academics
AP participation at Oakton is among the highest in FCPS. Roughly 59% of all students are enrolled in at least one AP course, and 82% of the Class of 2025 finished high school with at least one AP, dual enrollment, or other weighted course. The school offers AP courses across English, social studies, science, math, world languages, and the arts.
In 2024–25, Oakton honored 67 National Merit Commended students and 12 National Merit Semifinalists. Those numbers reflect both a high-achieving student body and a school culture that encourages students to pursue and prepare for competitive academic recognitions. The school also runs dual enrollment courses with a 98% pass rate, giving students the option to earn college credit before graduation.
AVID: Supporting Students in the Middle
One program worth highlighting is AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination). Oakton runs four AVID sections, one per grade level, designed for students who are capable of college-prep coursework but may not have the same family familiarity with the college process that other students have.
The results are concrete. Students from the Class of 2024 AVID cohort earned over $800,000 in college scholarships and were accepted to more than 40 universities. For families with first-generation college students, or kids who could benefit from structured academic coaching alongside their coursework, AVID is a genuine differentiator at a school this academically competitive.
Performing Arts
Oakton's Performing Arts Department is widely regarded as one of the premier programs in the region. It covers band, chorus, orchestra, and theatre arts, and the school has earned consistent recognition for the depth and quality of its offerings. This is not a typical school music program. Oakton performs at a level that attracts serious student musicians and competes with programs at dedicated arts schools.
The performing arts calendar is extensive, and the department has a strong parent support community. If you have a student who is serious about music, theatre, or orchestral performance, Oakton's program is worth knowing about well before you finalize your home search.
Athletics
Oakton fields varsity teams across a full range of sports as the Cougars. In recent years the school has claimed Virginia state titles in cross country, football, baseball, lacrosse, and men's swimming. The crew program is also strong: in 2024, Oakton boats finished in the top three at State Championships and went on to compete at the Stotesbury Cup and SRAA Nationals.
The athletics program has a robust booster community and competes at a high level within the Northern Region of Virginia high school athletics.
Clubs and Student Life
Oakton's clubs program is extensive. The DECA chapter is the largest in Virginia, a business and marketing student organization with competitions at the regional, state, and national level. The Teachers for Tomorrow program gives students classroom internship experience with local elementary schools. Student publications include The Oakton Outlook, a student newsmagazine, and Opus, a literary and arts magazine.
The Pyramid: Feeder Schools
For Herndon-area families, the relevant path into the Oakton pyramid runs through Crossfield Elementary and Rachel Carson Middle School. Other elementary schools in the pyramid include Hunters Woods, Navy, Mosaic, Marshall Road, Oakton Elementary, and Waples Mill. Middle school feeders include Franklin, Luther Jackson, Thoreau, and Rachel Carson, though several are split feeders that also send students to other high schools.
That split-feeder structure matters. Just because a neighbor's kids attended Carson Middle does not mean they ended up at Oakton High. The feeder path depends on the elementary school assignment, which depends on the specific address. Verify both the elementary and high school assignments through the FCPS locator before making any decisions.
What the Location Means Day to Day
Oakton High School sits on Sutton Road in Vienna, which is a different commute than buyers used to Herndon or Reston might expect. From the Crossfield and Fox Mill area of Herndon, students are looking at roughly a 10-to-15-minute drive east, primarily on Route 50 or through the Oak Marr area. There is no direct Silver Line access to the school, so the day-to-day logistics are car-dependent for most families.
The surrounding area near the school is quiet, residential Vienna. For students who have after-school activities or jobs, having a car or a reliable carpool is a practical consideration that families coming from transit-connected areas sometimes underestimate.

The Bottom Line
If your home search takes you to the Fox Mill Road and Crossfield area of Herndon, there is a real chance you are buying into the Oakton pyramid. That is worth knowing ahead of time, not only because Oakton is one of Virginia's top-ranked high schools, but also because the school sits in Vienna rather than Herndon, which affects commute, community ties, and how your family will connect to the school's network.
Kathy and I work in this area regularly. We know which streets feed to Oakton, which feed to Herndon High, and which sit on the boundary between the two. If you want to talk through how the pyramid maps onto a specific neighborhood or address range, reach out and we can walk through it with you.
