A 60-year-old zoning decision is at the center of the latest push to build townhomes on Reston’s most talked-about piece of land. 🏘️

Reston National Golf Course has been a battleground for over a decade. The owners paid nearly $24 million for the property back in 2019, and the community has pushed back every time a redevelopment proposal has surfaced. ⠀

This latest move is different, though. Rather than asking for a new approval, the ownership is arguing that a 1966 zoning decision already gives them the right to build 288 townhomes on roughly 14 acres of the course, without a full rezoning or a comprehensive plan amendment. ⠀

Fairfax County planners are reviewing whether that argument holds up legally. Hunter Mill Supervisor Walter Alcorn has said he won’t support any change without broad community consensus. The county also removed the golf course from its 2025 planning work program, which should have slowed things down. But the developers say they intend to keep pressing this interpretation regardless. ⠀ If you live in South Reston, especially anywhere backing up to that course along Colts Neck Road, this is worth following closely. Property values, open space, and the character of those neighborhoods are all part of the conversation. 🌳

Rescue Reston has been active on this issue for years and is a good resource if you want to stay informed. Because this is a legal and planning matter rather than a standard public hearing, the timeline is harder to predict than usual. Check the Fairfax County planning portal or Rescue Reston’s updates for the latest. 📋

Text or… Breaking news for Fairfax County: Governor Abigail Spanberger has vetoed the bill that would have opened the door for a casino in Tysons. The proposal would have made Fairfax County eligible for a casino and eventually could have led to a voter referendum, but that path stops here for now.
⠀
Big local takeaway: this matters far beyond one development site. The debate touched Tysons, Reston, Vienna, and the wider county because it raised bigger questions about traffic, growth, local control, and what kind of future residents want for this part of Northern Virginia. 🏛️
⠀
The governor said local governing boards should lead decisions like this, and Fairfax County leaders had already voiced opposition. For neighbors who were worried about a casino changing the direction of Tysons, this veto will feel significant. For people who supported the idea as an economic driver, it is a clear setback. 🎰
⠀
Who is this for? Anyone who lives, works, commutes, or owns a business in Fairfax County, especially in Tysons, Reston, and nearby areas. What to expect next is more conversation around redevelopment, economic growth, and what projects should shape Tysons going forward. Nothing about this issue disappears overnight, but this specific bill is done. 📰
⠀
For now, this is one of the biggest local development stories of the year, and it could influence how future projects are discussed across Fairfax County.

This 4-bedroom end-unit townhome in Manassas checks a lot of boxes that are genuinely hard to find together at this price point. Natural light pours in from three sides, the kitchen is large with stainless appliances and a granite island, and the family room is the kind of space that just feels comfortable to be in.

There is a full bedroom with its own en suite on the ground level, three more generous bedrooms upstairs, and the laundry is conveniently on the same floor as the bedrooms. A garage comes with it, which is not always a given in this range. ⠀ Step outside onto the maintenance-free deck and the view is all trees. A path leads into the woods and down to a creek. 🌿 The community also has a pool and tennis court.

Here is the detail that makes this one worth a closer look: the condo fee is just $150 a month, covering the roof, siding, and lawn. For a 4-bedroom townhome, that kind of low-maintenance living is genuinely rare. ⠀

One practical note: homes in this community tend to move quickly, so if this catches your eye, it is worth reaching out sooner rather than later. A showing can be arranged directly through the listing. ⠀

Would love it if this was repurposed into community space like a park etc instead of another overpriced townhome development
No way should a “decision” from 60 years ago impact or cause actions that the current citizenry doesn’t support. Even if that decision was valid, why wasn’t anything done? Keep the green space, up zone and move away from motonormative design in Fairfax.
@ameriviano good points! 😍
Yall need housing and golf courses are an enormous waste of resources and they benefit a tiny sliver of the community. Why are yall so opposed to…housing?
I think folks are concerned that the infrastructure (particularly traffic) isn’t up to par to support more housing. Also, they value the open space (not necessarily the golf course) and don’t trust the proposals being put forth. Agree with you on the wasted resources. Thanks for weighing in! 😍
If you own land close to it - pretty sure you don’t want more houses in your backyard
@insta441_plus any land they’d own close to it is already…housing.
@greaterrestonliving that’s ridiculous. If they “valued green space” they should have bought it. The idea that you can tell someone else what to do with their land when they are looking to do more of just exactly what’s already there is preposterous. They wanted to live in a golf course neighborhood and didn’t want to pay the price to live in an actual golf course neighborhood. If they’re concerned about traffic, WTH are they doing living in Fairfax county in the first place?
I don’t play golf but Reston should have a golf course and I think they could improve the golf course. It just needs love and care and I think if they turn that development to a better golf course/venue that would be great. Something like 2 silos.
@__foodluver__ now there’s an idea!💡
