greaterrestonliving Rails to River Trail is one of the best afternoon hikes near Reston, and most people have never heard of it. Graham and I are always looking for a new loop on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon when we want to get out without driving far. This one starts right at the picnic grounds at Lake Fairfax Park and follows Colvin Run out through the woods along what’s called the Rails to River Trail. The trail itself is gentle, not much elevation change, so it works really well with kids. You still feel like you’re properly out in the great outdoors even though you’re just a few minutes from home. ⛰️ About halfway through, you reach Route 7 near Carpers Farm Way. There’s an underpass that takes you under the highway without dealing with traffic, and from there you can either continue toward Great Falls Park or take the detour to Colvin Run Mill. The mill is the whole reason to make this trip. It’s a fully preserved, working mill and homestead from the 1800s, and the general store on site is a perfect mid-hike stop for a snack and a water refill. 🌿 Plan on two to three hours depending on how long you linger. There’s a 24/7 concierge, valet parking, and an à la carte menu that includes in-residence dining, a personal chef, grocery shopping, dog walking, and dry cleaning. Ownership also comes with elite status in the Marriott Bonvoy program. ⠀ We walked two units on camera, a two-bedroom and a two-bedroom plus den, and both were noticeably roomier than the square footage suggests.
