FFXnow reported Fairfax County’s job market is still feeling the pressure: new state data shows 43% more residents unemployed than this time last year. In November, 24,051 county residents were counted as seeking work, and the unemployment rate rose to 3.8% (up from 2.6% in Nov. 2024): the 9th straight month above 3%. The report points to wider regional impacts from federal cutbacks, and notes the figures are preliminary and were released late due to last fall’s federal government shutdown.

Changes are set to take effect for the 2026–27 school year, with some neighborhoods/schools flagged for follow-up recommendations by January 2027.

What about the NEW HS the county just bought? That is not part of the new district lines. 🤦♂️ I see these boundaries changing in a few years after the surge of new residents flock to the area.
@rager_racing that’s a complete waste of money. The new school will be the smaller than the next smallest HS in the county by a third. How will they justify programs and activities there when other schools in the area have needs for those same programs? The next school to the north is Herndon HS which is 80%, utilized and trending downward. It would have easily handled the over flow from Chantilly, Westfield and South Lake. In an environment where FCPS struggles to get raises, bonuses and classroom materials for its teachers, this money was better spent on anything else.
@rager_racing we’re waiting on the final boundary announcement for the western high school along with a final name.

Right now it’s cleared land with a few construction vehicles, but plans call for only 28 townhomes, which is a tiny release for a central Reston location.
What’s planned: modern, multi-level Craftmark Homes townhomes with the kind of finishes people ask for all the time. Expect features like quartz countertops, a big kitchen island, Bosch appliances, matte black hardware, and engineered hardwood on the main level, plus energy-efficient details like a tankless water heater and ENERGY STAR certification. ✨
Location-wise, this spot is the whole story. You’re positioned right between Reston Town Center and Lake Anne, with easy access to trails, daily errands, and all the local favorites that make Reston feel like Reston. If you’ve been hoping for new construction without leaving the heart of the community, this is the kind of project worth tracking early.

Big Reston news: RTC Next is officially 100% leased — that’s about 1.1M sq ft across two brand-new office towers at Reston Town Center. Some of the biggest names helping fill the buildings include Fannie Mae and Volkswagen Group of America, along with a lineup of additional tenants. And in a moment where office vacancy is a headline nationally, it’s a pretty major win to see Reston bucking the trend.
The other exciting part: the energy is about to spill into street level. Retail is expected to start opening this spring/summer, with several announced spots on the way, including Dogfish Head Alehouse, Grazie Nonna, Toastique, Yunnan by Potomac Noodle House, Livewell Animal Hospital, and Clarity (plus more).

Is it just offices and businesses? I feel like if they are pushing to make Reston a Tyson’s Corner clone, it needs more activities. This new development includes the performing arts center correct?
@vanadyenjoli The announcement was about the RTC Next portion of the Town Center having reached 100% occupancy which includes the large office towers and restaurants and retail. There is another half of RTC Next in the works (a few years off) that will include the performing arts center. Having said all that, it would be nice to have more activities in the area. It was disappointing to see that Puttshack would no longer be coming but wish we had more activities to get people mingling more. 😍

I wish it had more nightlife options that involved dancing and good music. Also adding more entertainment of things to do like bowling, level 99, or a ship garden, that’s what Reston needs. It gets boring fast!
@karimzebdi16 I hear you! I was disappointed when it was announce that Puttshack would no longer come to Reston Station. As far as I'm aware Pinstripes is still planned for Halley Rise, but totally agree that we could use some more night life and activities beyond restaurants. 😍
I wish it was more affordable and also invited small businesses. This is a completely gentrified town center and doesn’t feel like Reston used to be.
@vannonae definitely would be nice to see some more mom and pops and small businesses. There are some that I can think of like Scrawl Books, Ovissi, Abricott, Molly's Dog Care. Sometimes what seems like a big business is actually run by a local who owns the franchise. There are also places like Paddywax Candles which has 9 locations across the country but I would still consider them a small business. Nonethless, I get your point and agree that more small businesses would contribute to a greater sense of community. 😍

@sircastiic I don’t consider it a boom if corporations are lining their bottom line and community businesses don’t have a home. I consider it a colossal shift of resources outside of Reston
Some people prefer corporations over small “community” businesses- Tatte is a nice one, plenty of cool . Im in favor of 100 times more growth by 2030, smart cars, rails, etc-
Gotta go to an Old Town if you want that small biz feel
